If you are someone who has a "steps-per-day" goal, or you just roughly want to know how many steps you take to get somewhere, take 5 minutes to figure out how many steps you take in 1 kilometer.

There are online calculators that can give you a rough estimate, based on your height and other measurements, however I would recommend simply experimenting to figure it out.

First, find out how long your steps are. There are many ways to do this, but for example, you could simply use a tape measure. Lay it out. Starting at the 0 mark, take 10 steps along it. Divide the distance you traveled by 10 to get your average step length.

To find out how many steps you take in 1 kilometer:
1,000 divided by your average step length in meters

To find out how many kilometers you need to walk to achieve X steps:
average step length in meters divided by 1,000 times X

Bam! Write these down somewhere. Use them in combination with Google Maps to make your "steps-per-day" goal planning much easier, and rid youself of the need to use and constantly check a step counter (pedometer) on your smartphone or smartwatch.
